Description:

2011 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT - AUGUST 2 On Tuesday, August 2, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., neighborhoods throughout Salem will join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 28th Annual National Night Out against crime! The program was pioneered by the National Association of Town Watch and is sponsored locally by the Salem Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies in the Willamette Valley. The event is an opportunity for neighbors to take one evening out of the year to build relationships by learning from one another about what is happening in the neighborhood. Across the country and in Salem, neighbors host a variety of special events, such as block parties, BBQ's, mimi-parades, flashlight walks, kids activities and even graffiti paint over parties. The overall goal is for the community to stand in unity against crime right where it counts - on their very own block. In Salem, consider registering your block party with the Salem Police Department. The department sends our special teams to visit the block parties around town. Scheduling of visits is done by area and requests are numerous, so flexibility of time is imperative. Block party hosts will receive a commemorative Salem Police Department item (while supplies last, one per party). Registration forms for the 2011 season are available. The registration deadline is July 22. If you have never hosted a party or would like some ideas, check out our Block Party Booklet which is intended to give you some helpful hints on how to make your neighborhood activity a safe and resounding success. Are you interested in closing your street or having a party in the park? For these types of parties, a permit is required. Although fees are waived for National Night Out you must submit an application to the Parks & Transportation Services Division by July 22. Signs and barricades are made available with your permit. For more information about temporary street closure of park use permits, please call 503-588-6211 The theme for 2011 is the BBQ potluck: Crime: Make it rare on your block! Join Neighborhood Watch. So, pull out your mini grills or hibachis and have a hot dog of a party on your street. Check out the latest edition of "The Charcoal Chatter for tips on how to get your party "raring" to go! If you have any questions about this event, call the Crime Prevention Unit at 503-588-6175.
